Course Description

Syllabus coming soon

The goal of the Middle School Math course is to prepare students for pre-algebra. The course takes an in-depth approach to understanding the arithmetic of rational numbers and to developing the basic ideas of algebra and geometry. A variety of tools and activities will be incorporated to help students compute and apply decimals, fractions, percents, scientific notation, powers, and negative numbers to solve real-world problems. Solving problems using paper and technology such as dynamic geometry software will help prepare the students for higher level math in high school and beyond.

Course Structure

This course has two live 60-minute class sessions per week for review, instruction, practice, and discussion of homework problems/concepts that need further clarification. An important part of this course is seeing, interacting with, and learning from each other. For students who must miss a class or want to re-watch a lesson, video recordings of classes will be available. Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours per week on homework assignments.

Who should enroll?

This course is for students in grades 6-7, who have successfully completed 5th grade math and are preparing for pre-algebra.

Technology Requirements

  • High speed, broadband Internet
  • Web cam, sound card, and microphone (for live sessions)

Instructor Bio

Rebecca Cotter

Rebecca is joining the Aim Academy Online faculty for the 2022-23 school year. Welcome, Rebecca!

Hi! I am Rebecca Cotter, and I’m excited to be teaching with Aim Academy Online. I am passionate about teaching and strive to engage my students using a variety of methods so students with different learning styles can all learn and succeed in math. My teaching goals are to have classes where students feel comfortable participating and asking questions; to challenge without frustrating; to make those who like math, love it, and those who hate math, actually like it.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from California State University San Bernardino, I worked for several years as a computer programmer for a Department of Defense contractor. And then my homeschool journey began. Not always easy but definitely worth it, I homeschooled my three children from kindergarten through high school graduation. In addition to homeschooling my own kids, I taught math at my local homeschool co-op. I now tutor students one-on-one and teach math classes online. I’m looking forward to partnering with you while you’re on your own homeschool journey.
