Course Description
This is the second in a series of mini-courses that looks at the characteristics of those who succeed—in life, in business, and in the classroom—have in common. Aim Academy instructor and licensed professional counselor, Bonnie Gonzalez unpacks each secret to success in her highly interactive classes and shows you how to develop it in your life. Students and parents are both encouraged to sign-up for these unique classes.
Self Control, Gratitude and a Growth Mindset, three qualities that are necessary for success.
Could you pass the Marshmallow Test? Or better yet, do you even know what the Marshmallow Test is? Over 40 years ago psychologist Walter Mischel designed a test to measure self-control in children with – you guessed it – marshmallows.
In the years since Mischel started testing kids, we have spent a good deal of time examining what it takes to develop our own self- control. From identifying the hot and cool systems of the brain to refocusing our thoughts on the non-essential elements of a temptation this class will help you to manage your temptations by learning strategies for waiting and for saying no.
In the 1998 Martin Seligman coined the phrase positive psychology, and began a revolution in the field of psychology. Gratitude is but one aspect of this new way of viewing human thought and emotion. Gratitude can be defined as affirming that there are good things in the world and recognizing that the source of this goodness is outside of ourselves (Emmons, 2002). In this class we will be looking at how gratitude benefits us in everything we do, and how to foster this attitude in our own lives.
Finally, a Growth Mindset is one that sees our intelligence and abilities as something that can change and grow. A fixed mindset, on the other hand sees us as “stuck with who we are”. Developed by Carol Dweck the concept of developing a growth mindset has livened the field of education and personal development by helping us view our potential and encouraging us to rethink our mistakes and failures. This class will teach you how to change your mindset to one of growth through learning how to set goals, how to fail successfully and how to use deliberate practice to use those failures to improve brain function.
This class is the second in the series of the Secrets of Success. Class will meet in a live session for 1.5 hours per weeks. Students will also have the opportunity to view videos which clarify the concepts and foster a better understanding of each of the three secrets. Written lectures and informational websites will also be used to enhance learning.

This class runs for 7 weeks. We will meet Thursday afternoon for a live lecture/discussion and application of the principles of self-control, gratitude and a growth mindset.
