Course Description

This class is a middle school science course with labs.

Course Description: This course is designed to provide a survey of the basic concepts of the science and technology of investigation used by forensic scientists and crime scene investigators.  Students will learn how to question, hypothesize, analyze, evaluate, and communicate about evidence typically uncovered at crime scenes. This course will expose students not only to forensic fields but also to the scientific disciplines that serve as the basis for forensic science.

Lab Activities: Students learn the scientific method as it applies to the field of forensic science. Students practice investigative skills through virtual and hands-on labs and crime scene analysis.

Who Should Take This Course: Interested inquisitive students. No application required.

Instructor Bio

Dr. Terri Kanner

Dr. Kanner received a BS in Biology from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University. Following post-graduate work at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., she practiced full-time in Silver Spring Maryland. Dr. Kanner took a sabbatical from dentistry to homeschool her two children. In 2010, Dr. Kanner launched a career in online science education teaching AP Biology through PA Homeschoolers.  In addition to teaching online courses, Dr. Kanner also maintains an active adjunct professor status in the greater Boston area at colleges including Northeastern University, Regis College and Massasoit Community College. Her course offerings include Biology, Biology for Engineers, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Chemistry.  She is particularly passionate about helping students to understand and appreciate how science directly affects their everyday life.
