Vive le Français: Intro to French

(fall semester)

This course will introduce students to the basics of the French language and culture in a fun, engaging manner. Students will adopt a snail (just the shell) and personify their pet all in French. By learning basic vocabulary (colors, activities, food, clothing, etc.), students will create a home and document the life of their snail. Additionally, students will learn to speak some basic phrases and talk about their pet. The course aims to lay the groundwork for later, more formal, language study. Starting a language at a young age helps the brain assimilate language better.

Course Structure

The live class will be dedicated to learning and practicing the course material. We’ll use games, songs, and roleplays to make our time together interactive. I will upload documents and provide links for extra practice. To also reinforce learning, students will be adding information as the course progresses about their pet based so they will have a finished product in French. Students should expect no more than an hour of work during the week.

Who should enroll?

4th-8th grades who are interested in learning French, and perhaps studying it formally during high school

Technology Requirements:

  • High speed, broadband Internet
  • Sound card and microphone (for live sessions)
  • Streaming video capabilities to watch recorded lectures
  • Something that takes photos to share your work
  • Printer

Evaluation and Feedback

Students will be creating a document about their snail that will include both pictures and writing. They will upload at different intervals so I can look over and give encouragement. No formal grades will be given.

Communication

I believe communication is important for success in an online learning environment. I encourage both students and parents to let me know as soon as possible if there are any questions or concerns. I want to see everyone be successful, and keeping an open line of communication is essential. Please email me so I can best serve you and your student.

Learning French with Stories: Intro to French

(second semester)

This course will use stories to introduce students to the basics of French language and culture. Students will learn vocabulary and basic expressions to help them engage with the story. Games, gestures, flashcards, songs, mnemonics, acting, question/answer techniques will be used for comprehension and retention as the brain makes new connections with the language.

Instructor Bio

Lisa Reissig

Bonjour!  I’m Lisa Reissig, and I’m excited to be a part of Aim Academy.  I started to learn French at the age of twelve, and I’ve loved it ever since- the language and the culture.   I have a BA in French from Wheaton College (IL), and an MA in Instructional Systems Design from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.    I’ve spent time studying in France as well as traveling to Montréal and Québec City.

For the past twenty-five years, I’ve had the experience of teaching elementary through high school French in both brick-and-mortar schools as well as online schools.  I’ve homeschooled my daughters which has been a great teaching position!  I hold a TEFL certificate enabling me to teach English to people from all over the world.   I love being able to share my passion for language to students in a creative, engaging, and caring manner.

I currently live on Maryland’s Eastern Shore with my husband, two daughters, and black cockapoo dog.   When I’m not teaching, I like to cook, cross-stitch, watch baseball, and eat chocolate, the world’s best food.
