Course Description

AP Chemistry Course Syllabus

The AP Chemistry course aims to provide a course that ensures that the student is prepared to succeed in college chemistry and to be ready for the AP Chemistry Exam. This is accomplished by teaching all the AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description topics. The emphasis in this class is placed on the application of chemical concepts with real-world applications.

The course is organized around the four big ideas and is aligned with the six science practices. Laboratory experiments are conducted to complement the material being learned. The experiments will include 16+ formal labs, many of which are inquiry-based and many minilabs. Each of the topics within the nine units is covered in-depth, and the students will be assessed after completing each topic unit. Students should expect to work independently and be prepared for college-level work. This course requires a significant time investment to cover all the required material. In addition, a summer assignment will be required of all course participants. The live class will consist of hands-on labs, demos, and problem-solving sessions. Outside classwork will include textbook and online readings, problem-sets, topic worksheets, videos, and online laboratory investigations. In addition, four projects will be assigned to students throughout the course.

Supplies Needed

  • Chemistry Bound Lab Notebook with graph paper
  • Sharpened pencils with eraser

  • Scientific Calculator Required (a calculator with graphing capabilities preferred but not required)

Lab Materials List will be sent 4-6 weeks prior to the start of the course. ($75 – $125)

Who should enroll?

This class is for students in grades 10-12 who have completed a basic biology and chemistry course as well as Algebra 1.

Prerequisites: Biology, Chemistry and Algebra 1. A summer assignment will be posted July 1st and will be due the first day of the course.

Technology Requirements

  • High speed, broadband Internet
  • Sound card and microphone (for live sessions)
  • Streaming video capabilities to watch recorded lectures

  • Scanning capabilities (phone, iPad, tablet, or scanner)

  • Microsoft or Google products (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides)

Evaluation and Feedback

  • All grades will be available in Canvas for students and parents.
  • Assignments will be graded within five days of a due date, unless otherwise specified.
  • Students will be evaluated through performance on quizzes & tests, mini-laboratory investigations, formal lab reports, homework, and independent projects.
  • A progress report will be given mid-semester and at the end of a semester. Parent conferences are available upon request.
  • Quizzes & Tests will comprise 30% of the total points, Labs & Mini-Labs 30%, Homework 30%, and Projects 10%.

Note: Course instructor highly recommends the iBook version of the following book, if possible. This can be printed for student use, although an e-book is fine as well. Please ask course instructor for recommendations if you need a printing company.

    Lisa is a great teacher! She loves science and it shows in how much fun she has in class. She does lots of lab activities so class isn’t dry or dull and is happy to give extra help if a student needs it.

Lisa Duckworth

A former AAO parent, Lisa is joining the Aim Academy Online faculty for the 2022-23 school year. Welcome, Lisa!

Hi! I am Lisa Duckworth, and I am super excited to teach science with Aim Academy! I have been an educator for 30 years. I have a Bachelor of Science in Science Education from North Carolina State University (Go Wolfpack!) and have taught science to all ages of students. I started teaching public high school science in NC – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and AP Biology and then took time off to be a homeschooling mom to 4 fabulous kids. Over the last 20 years, I have been teaching in our homeschool coop, and my teaching repertoire has expanded to math, history, English, art, and science classes for all ages, you name a topic, and I have probably taught a course in it over the years. For the last seven years, I have been teaching science summer camp classes to kids ages 7-16 and teaching science classes at our local community college. But, as you can probably tell, I love science!

In addition to my passion for all things science, I am an animal lover. I live on a horse farm with my four horses, two dogs, four cats, lots of fish, snails, and our tortoise, Tessa! My other passions include reading, cooking, scrapbooking, watching musicals, and collecting plastic ducks. I love traveling and visiting new places, where I always try to visit a science museum! I am a very hands-on interactive type of learner and teacher. I think students learn science best when they are doing science. So my classes are fun and filled with lots of layers of learning. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know you as we learn together!
